About Me

My name is Sharon Tang - a proud Colombian-Chinese queer woman. I am a high school art educator and artist.  I love to cook, love my family, friends and partner fiercely, I have the sweetest baby nephews, I've read the Harry Potter series more times than I can remember, I will stop and ask to pet every puppy I see and most importantly, I am so incredibly passionate about teaching young minds about art! I will move mountains to make sure that my students are exposed to the beautiful art that surrounds them every single day.

Teaching Philosophy

Through the classes I have taken at California State University, Northridge and my experiences in the classroom, I have developed a personal teaching philosophy that will be implemented into my future classrooms. My teaching philosophy is very student centered - I believe that students are capable of creating great work and my job is to inspire and empower them to do just that. My role as an educator is to provide students with every opportunity to create and solve artistic problems and step outside of their comfort zone. I will also strive to challenge them to try new things, to achieve what they thought they couldn't and support students in gaining the skills they need to communicate their ideas effectively and make art that is meaningful to them. Critique is a strong core to a student’s learning process, it aids students in building literacy skills through observing and talking about art, and by writing about their own ideas and artwork.

My students will be able to approach art as a form in which to explore issues, interests, and themes that relate to them and their world. I absolutely believe in teaching content that is meaningful, applicable, and inviting to students to keep them engaged. My goal is to increase student motivation, awareness and understanding of the arts, while implementing interdisciplinary-based skills in lessons involving social studies, math, language arts and multiculturalism.

One of my greatest strengths as an educator is meeting each student’s unique needs by developing a personal understanding of each of them. I achieve this by seeing and assessing the students as individuals and tailoring lesson plans to accommodate multiple intelligences as well as implementing differentiated instruction for all ability levels. In my classroom, I want students to have freedom that allows for expression and creativity, they should be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and to understand their strengths and weaknesses. After this base is developed, the curriculum can be tailored to tie in with each student’s learning style.

I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I am constantly seeking out professional development opportunities to stay current on learning, motivation, behavior and development techniques and theories so that I can be a better educator for my students. I realize that most students will not grow up to work as artists, but the habits of mind gained through art classes will serve them no matter their future career path.

Artist Statement

The art world has been perhaps one of the most influential aspects of my life. From where I began, to where I am now - the opportunities and moments have shaped my life, not just as artist but as a human being.
